Disney Buying Lucasfilms - Star Wars Movies coming 2015
Published: 11/07/2012 05:15:49 PM
The likes of Darth Vader, Princess Leia, and Chewbacca are joining Mickey Mouse and Ironman. After talks that lasted almost 2 years, the Walt Disney Company has bought Lucasfilms for 4 billion dollars. The news has come as a huge shock to the entertainment industry.
Walt-Disney Company's Big Announcement
In addition to the surprising announcement, the Walt Disney Company has announced plans to release a seventh installment in the popular series, which is expected to be released in 2015. Disney's CEO Bob Iger has also revealed Disney's plans to release episodes 8 and 9, which will be released after 2015. Iger also noted that the Walt Disney Company plans to release a new movie every two or three years. Another part of the deal includes integrating the franchise in Disney TV shows, parks, and video games. Other George Lucas companies, such as Skywalker Ranch and LucasArts, were also purchased in the deal.
The man behind Lucasfilms, George Lucas, had been trying to get out of the feature film business for some time. He released a statement regarding his decision. "For the past 35 years, one of my greatest pleasures has been to see Star Wars passed from one generation to the next. It's now time for me to pass Star Wars on to a new generation of filmmakers. Iíve always believed that Star Wars could live beyond me, and I thought it was important to set up the transition during my lifetime."
New Films for Next 100 Years - Possible
Co-chairman of Lucasfilms, Kathleen Kennedy, will become the new studio's president. She's also been hired to be the executive producer of the future films. George Lucas will also be a creative consultant for the future releases. Lucas and Kennedy have apparently already been working on new films with an unknown group of writers. The two have noted the large amount of ideas generated for the series, and have said new films could be made for the next 100 years.
Mixed Reactions to the News
Reaction to the news has been both negative and positive. Negative comments have included worry over whether or not the entertainment giant will break from the original story and characters, calling out George Lucas by calling him a sell-out, and some even thought of the news as a joke. Positive reactions have noted Disney's track record with company acquisitions, excitement to see a new take on the franchise, and faith in Disney to maintain the series. People have also taken to creating humor out of the situation. Different social media websites are buzzing with pictures, jokes, and videos poking fun at the news.
Other major companies bought out by Disney include Pixar Animation Studios and Marvel Studios. Their latest buyout is also the company's fourth largest deal in history. It's behind the 20 billion, 8 billion and 5 billion dollar buyouts of ABC in 1995, Pixar in 2006 and Fox Family in 2001. The buyout was larger than the 2009 buyout of Marvel. This is latest major purchase by Disney showing their intent to be a great force in the entertainment business.
